Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), Niger State, has confirmed the death of a 400-level student who was reportedly struck by a stray bullet during a land dispute in his hometown.

The deceased, Isma’il Ishaq Magaji, a student in the Department of Public Administration, was reportedly caught in the crossfire during a dispute involving members of the Wawa community in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The university’s Deputy Registrar for Information, Alhaji Baba Akote, confirmed the incident in a statement issued to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lapai on Saturday, September 19, 2026.

Reacting to the student’s death, the Vice Chancellor of IBB University, Professor Mohammed Sulaiman, expressed sadness over the incident, describing Magaji’s death as a painful loss to the university community.

Sulaiman extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, classmates, and associates. He also prayed for Magaji’s soul to rest in peace and for his loved ones to be granted the strength to cope with the loss.

The Vice Chancellor appealed to the communities involved in the land dispute to end the hostilities and seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

He urged all parties to exercise restraint, embrace dialogue, and prioritize peaceful coexistence in order to prevent further violence and loss of life.

The university did not provide additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting or give an update on the ongoing land dispute in Wawa.
