UNIABUJA Centre for Creative Writing Postgraduate Programmes Form, 2024/2025
The University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has invited suitably qualified candidates to apply for admission into its Professional Postgraduate Programmes in Creative Writing for the 2024/2025 academic session.
The programmes are offered through the University’s Centre for Creative Writing, which was established in March 2023 to identify, foster and nurture creative writing talents in Nigeria and across Africa.

The Centre is committed to promoting literary excellence, professional writing skills and the advancement of the creative arts, while providing aspiring and established writers with opportunities to develop their craft.

The Centre offers professional programmes and areas of specialisation including:
- Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Creative Writing
- Master’s Degree (MA) in Creative Writing
- Doctorate Degree (PhD) in Creative Writing
- Narrative Fiction Writing
- Non-Fiction Writing
- Creative Writing for Cinematic Dramaturgy
- Creative Writing and Nigerian Feminism
- Creative Writing Production
- Professional Writing
- Video Game Narrative
- Creative Writing in Film Studies
- Publishing Writing
- Poetry Writing
- Screenwriting
General Admission Requirements
Postgraduate Diploma and Master’s Programmes
Applicants seeking admission into the Professional PGD and MA programmes are expected to meet the following requirements:
- A BA or BSc degree from a recognised institution, with a minimum 3.0 GPA and 60% in research work.
- The degree should preferably be in areas such as English, Literature, Theatre Arts, Linguistics, Journalism, Mass and Public Communication, History, Art History, Religious Studies, Philosophy or Education.
- Candidates with a Social Science degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) may also be considered, provided they can demonstrate relevant creative writing experience through their profile or portfolio.
- Such candidates must also be willing to complete any required remedial coursework.
PhD Programme
Applicants for the PhD in Creative Writing are required to have:
- A Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Creative Writing, or a relevant postgraduate degree from a recognised institution.
- A minimum 3.0 GPA and 60% in research work.
- Candidates with a PGD may be required to undertake additional remedial coursework.
Duration of Programmes
The duration of the programmes is as follows:
- Postgraduate Diploma (PGD): 8 months
- Master’s Degree (MA): 2 years
- Doctorate Degree (PhD): 3–4 years
