The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has warned that employers who fail to provide adequate welfare for corps members, including accommodation and transportation, could be barred from participating in the scheme.

The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, gave the warning during an interactive session with corps members while on a working visit to Kogi State.

According to Nafiu, organisations that receive corps members have a responsibility to provide the necessary support to ensure their welfare. He stated that any employer who fails to provide suitable accommodation and transport would be blacklisted and would no longer be eligible to receive corps members for national service.

He explained that improved welfare enhances corps members’ productivity, boosts morale, and contributes to a more rewarding service year. He therefore urged employers to treat corps members with dignity, care and respect.

The Director-General also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the safety and well-being of all corps members. He appealed to state governments, local government councils and other stakeholders to continue supporting the objectives of the NYSC scheme.

Addressing the corps members, Nafiu encouraged them to remain disciplined, dedicated and law-abiding throughout their service year. He advised them to avoid any conduct capable of bringing the NYSC into disrepute and urged them to take full advantage of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme by developing practical skills, identifying business opportunities within their host communities and cultivating a savings culture despite the country’s economic challenges.

Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator in Kogi, Mrs Tochi Chika Chris-Moneke, commended the Director-General for his visit, describing it as a demonstration of his commitment to the welfare, safety and security of corps members and NYSC staff.

She also disclosed that the Kogi State Secretariat is making arrangements to organise a workshop for corps employers, alongside a Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers programme, in the near future.
