JAMB Clarifies ‘Not Admitted’ and ‘Admission in Progress’ Statuses

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board JAMB has clarified the meanings of the ‘Not Admitted’, ‘Admission in Progress’ and ‘Admitted’ statuses displayed on candidates’ Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

The Board provided the clarification in an explainer video shared on Thursday, advising candidates to continue checking their CAPS regularly as the admission process progresses.

‘Not Admitted’ does not mean final rejection

According to JAMB, a ‘Not Admitted’ status simply means that a candidate has not yet been offered admission.

“This simply means you’ve not been offered admission yet. However, it does not necessarily mean you will not be admitted,” the Board explained.

JAMB therefore advised candidates whose status remains ‘Not Admitted’ to continue checking their CAPS for possible updates.

What ‘Admission in Progress’ means

The Board explained that ‘Admission in Progress’ may appear when an institution has proposed a candidate for admission, but the process has not yet been completed.

“This means your institution’s admission officer has proposed you for admission, but awaiting the head of institution’s recommendation,” JAMB stated.

The status may also apply when the head of an institution has recommended a candidate, but the proposed admission is still awaiting JAMB’s approval or disapproval.

However, JAMB cautioned candidates against assuming that ‘Admission in Progress’ means admission has already been secured.

“Please note that ‘Admission in Progress’ does not mean automatic admission,” the Board said.

It explained that a recommended admission offer could still be rejected if the candidate did not meet the required conditions.

“This is because the recommended offer could still be disapproved by the Board if you don’t meet the prerequisite requirements,” JAMB stated.

When a candidate becomes ‘Admitted’

JAMB said a candidate’s status changes to ‘Admitted’ after the Board officially approves the admission offer.

“This is the point you get the message, ‘CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE BEEN OFFERED ADMISSION’,” it explained.

Candidates who receive the official admission offer can then use CAPS to either accept or reject the offer.

Candidates advised to keep checking CAPS

The Board further noted that a candidate’s CAPS status may change at different stages of the admission process.

“Remember, your CAPS status will keep changing as the admission process continues until the final stage where you print your admission letter,” JAMB said.

JAMB urged candidates to continue checking their CAPS regularly and to rely on the Board’s official communication channels for verified information regarding their admission status.
