UNIABUJA appoints substantive Registrar & Librarian

The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, chaired by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Distinguished Senator Dr Olanrewaju Tejuoso, has approved the appointment of Mal. Alkasim Musa Umar as the University’s substantive Registrar and Dr Rose Lade Mommoh as substantive University Librarian.

The appointments, which take effect from Friday, 10 July 2026, were ratified during the Council’s 101st Regular Meeting held on Friday, 10 and Saturday, 11 July 2026. In line with the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act and the University’s regulations, both officials will serve a single five-year tenure.

Congratulating the appointees, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, described their emergence as timely, noting that their appointments come at an important stage in the University’s drive to strengthen its position as a globally competitive institution.

Alkasim Musa Umar – Registrar

Mal. Alkasim Musa Umar earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Business Administration from the University of Maiduguri. He has also completed several professional training programmes, including certifications from the Digital Bridge Institute and Souters, United Kingdom.

He began his professional career at the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, where he served as Liaison Officer in Abuja between 1999 and 2002 before taking on responsibilities in the Junior Establishment Unit. He later joined the University of Abuja Registry and has accumulated 17 years of service across several strategic offices, including the Academic Affairs Division, Establishment Division, TETFund Desk Office, and as Faculty Officer for the Faculties of Education and Agriculture.

Before his appointment, he spent eight years as Deputy Registrar, most recently overseeing the administration of the Institute of Education, where he coordinated registry operations, credential screening and secretariat services for the Institute’s Management Board.

Throughout his career, Umar has contributed to several important University committees, serving in various capacities on the Undergraduate Admissions Committee, Senate Committee on the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards, University Portal Committee and the Vice-Chancellor Handing-Over Committee.

He has also represented the University at several international engagements, including the International University Exhibition in Nairobi, the Wageningen Innovation Challenge in the Netherlands and the International Association of Universities Conference in Tokyo, all held in 2024. He is married and blessed with children.

Rose Lade Mommoh – University Librarian

Dr Rose Lade Mommoh holds a Bachelor of Library Science from the University of Maiduguri, a Master of Library Science from Bayero University, Kano, and a PhD in Information Science from the University of Maiduguri.

She joined the University of Abuja as a Graduate Librarian in 1999 and steadily advanced through the ranks, attaining the position of Deputy University Librarian and Associate Professor in 2020.

With over 25 years of professional experience, she has built an impressive career in library administration, information management, research support, digital library services and collection development.

Over the years, Dr Mommoh has held several leadership positions within the University Library, including Head of the Circulation Unit, Collection Development and Readers’ Services at the Engineering Library. Prior to her appointment, she served as the Postgraduate Coordinator in the Department of Library and Information Science.

She has authored numerous scholarly publications and presented academic papers at conferences within and outside Nigeria, including events in China and Poland. She is a registered member of the Librarians Registration Council of Nigeria as well as the Nigerian Library Association.
