UNIOSUN Issues Campus Security Alert

Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has issued an urgent security advisory, introducing mandatory safety measures for all staff and students in response to rising national security concerns and reported threats against tertiary institutions

In a circular dated Friday and signed by the Registrar, Mrs Atinuke A. Oguntunde, the university stated that the prevailing security situation requires heightened vigilance. The circular, referenced UNIOSUN/REG/ADM/CICR/16/0009, outlines 12 compulsory safety measures aimed at preventing security breaches across the university.

“The cooperation of all staff and students is essential in ensuring a safe and secure learning and working environment,” the Registrar stated.

Under the new directives, all staff and students must visibly display their university identity cards at all times while on campus. Security personnel have been authorised to carry out mandatory identity checks, and the management warned that failure to cooperate with routine screening procedures will not be tolerated.

The university also directed members of the community to immediately report any suspicious persons, objects or activities to the University Security Unit or the nearest law enforcement agency. In addition, the admission of unknown or unauthorised persons into offices, lecture rooms, laboratories and hostels has been strictly prohibited.

To prevent unnecessary panic, the university cautioned against the spread of rumours and unverified information.

“The university community is warned against spreading unverified information or rumours capable of causing panic,” the circular stated.

Other measures include avoiding isolated areas, particularly at night, and refraining from sharing real-time locations or travel plans on social media. Staff and students are also advised to keep their mobile phones fully charged, save emergency contact numbers, move in groups whenever possible, and avoid using untrusted means of transport or accepting lifts from strangers.

The management stressed that maintaining a safe and secure campus is a collective responsibility and assured members of the university community that academic and administrative activities would continue under the strengthened security framework.
