UNICAL Raises Alarm Over Fake Distance Learning Centre in Port Harcourt

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has disowned an illegal distance learning center operating in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, warning members of the public against enrolling in programs offered by the center.
The university said the center, operating as Bori Business School, is illegally using the name and logo of the University of Calabar to mislead unsuspecting members of the public.
According to a circular issued by the Registrar of the university, Dr. (Mrs.) Chukwuka I. Icha, Bori Business School is located at the NUJ Press Center, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The center reportedly advertises Diploma, B.Sc., B.A., PGD, and Ph.D. programs to prospective students.
UNICAL denies affiliation with Bori Business School
The university clarified that Bori Business School has no affiliation with the University of Calabar and has never been affiliated with the institution.
Management also recalled that the university discontinued the operation of satellite campuses in 2003 following a directive from the Federal Ministry of Education through the National Universities Commission (NUC), which prohibited the operation of such centers.
The Registrar stated that the University of Calabar does not have any satellite campus, coordinator, or agent authorized to admit students or operate academic programs on its behalf outside its approved campuses.
University warns prospective students
UNICAL urged members of the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to individuals or groups falsely presenting themselves as representatives of the university.
Management stressed that the university completely dissociates itself from the activities of Bori Business School.
The institution also urged prospective students and members of the public to verify information about UNICAL admissions, academic programs, and approved study centers through the university’s official channels before making any payment or enrollment decision.
UNICAL calls for investigation
The University of Calabar further called on the Rivers State Ministry of Education to investigate the activities of Bori Business School and ensure its closure for allegedly using the university’s identity without authorization and bringing its reputation into disrepute.
Management urged the public to take note of the disclaimer and verify all admission-related information directly through the University of Calabar before enrolling in any program purportedly offered by the institution.
