UNIZIK suspends Prof feanyi Sunny Odinye

The Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, has approved the suspension of Prof. Ifeanyi Sunny Odinye, a lecturer in the Department of Chinese Studies, for three months on half salary, following the preliminary findings of a six-member Special Investigative Panel.

The panel submitted its preliminary report on Friday, August 21, 2026.

The student involved in the incident, Chikamso Favour Okechukwu, has, on the directive of the Vice-Chancellor, been referred to the Student Examination Misconduct Committee for further consideration.

The Vice-Chancellor has also extended the Special Investigative Panel’s mandate by two weeks to enable it to complete its assignment and address the remaining aspects of its five-point terms of reference.

The panel, chaired by Prof. Emmanuel Obidimma, Provost of the College of Postgraduate Studies, addressed two of the five issues in its preliminary report. It found Prof. Odinye in violation of Section 5.8.3 of the General and Academic Regulations (GAR) for failing to properly document and submit the examination misconduct case involving the student using the prescribed Examination Misconduct Report Form.

The panel also found that Prof. Odinye returned the phone recovered during the examination to the student on the same day, contrary to Section 5.8.1(iv) of the GAR.

The remaining issues to be investigated include allegations of sexual harassment, the identities of those involved in the assault on Prof. Odinye, and whether a kidnapping incident occurred.

The panel is expected to conclude its investigation and submit its recommendations to the Vice-Chancellor, after which a final decision, including possible criminal prosecution where necessary, may be considered.

The Vice-Chancellor reiterated his administration’s commitment to staff and student welfare, zero tolerance for unethical practices, transparency and fair hearing.
