UNIPORT SUG Raises Alarm Over Overspeeding and Reckless Driving on Campus

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has issued a stern warning to students, motorists, motorcyclists, tricycle operators and other road users against overspeeding, reckless driving and other dangerous vehicular activities within the university campus.

The warning was contained in an official notice dated 16th September 2026 and signed by the SUG Executive President, Hon. Justice Adiele Aleruchi Azubuike.

According to the notice, the union raised concerns over increasing incidents of overspeeding, reckless driving, dangerous manoeuvring and other irresponsible road practices on campus.

The SUG emphasised that ensuring the safety of students, staff and other members of the university community is a collective responsibility. It warned that failure to observe campus traffic regulations could endanger lives and property.

Directives to Motorists and Road Users

All motorists operating within the university campus have been directed to:

• Observe approved speed limits and comply with campus traffic regulations.
• Refrain from overspeeding, racing, reckless driving, dangerous overtaking and other unsafe driving practices.
• Exercise particular caution around lecture halls, hostels, pedestrian walkways, residential areas, motor parks and other locations with heavy student movement.
• Avoid parking in unauthorised areas or obstructing roads, walkways, entrances and emergency access routes.
• Comply with lawful instructions from authorised university security and traffic personnel.
• Ensure that vehicles are properly registered and operated in accordance with applicable university regulations.

Measures Against Defaulters

The SUG stated that vehicles involved in overspeeding, reckless driving, dangerous driving or other serious breaches of applicable campus traffic regulations may be reported to the relevant authorities.

Subject to established university procedures and the authority of designated officials, vehicles belonging to defaulters may be seized or impounded, while owners or drivers could face appropriate penalties or disciplinary action.

The union further noted that repeat offenders may face stricter measures, where permitted under existing university regulations.

12-Man Acting Traffic Enforcement Committee

As part of efforts to strengthen road safety and improve compliance, the SUG announced the constitution of a 12-Man Acting Traffic Enforcement Committee.

The committee will be responsible for:

• Monitoring compliance with campus traffic regulations.
• Reporting cases of overspeeding and reckless driving.
• Identifying locations where traffic violations frequently occur.
• Educating students and motorists on responsible road use.
• Documenting repeat offenders.
• Making recommendations on campus traffic management.
• Working with authorised university security personnel.
• Submitting periodic reports to the SUG President.

The committee is chaired by Eze Prince, with Obiora Victor Ayogu serving as Secretary and Diligence Chimeru Umeobi as Coordinator, alongside other appointed members.

The SUG clarified that the committee will operate within the authority granted to it and collaborate with university management, the security department and other relevant authorities.

Final Appeal

The union described the notice as a formal warning to all motorists and road users operating within the University of Port Harcourt campus, urging them to comply fully with traffic regulations and prioritise the safety of others.

The SUG stressed that overspeeding is not a demonstration of driving skill, warning that irresponsible driving can put lives at risk.

It called on all members of the university community to contribute towards maintaining a safe, peaceful and orderly campus environment.
