Tension reportedly erupted in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, on Wednesday after staff and students of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) gathered at the residence of the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, following the arrival of police officers who allegedly came to arrest him.

The incident reportedly occurred early in the morning, with Ogunwole saying the officers arrived at his official residence at about 6:10 a.m.

Police Officers Arrive at FUOYE Vice-Chancellor’s Residence

According to Ogunwole, his children alerted him after noticing security personnel around the residence.

He said he initially remained inside because he was unsure whether the men were genuine police officers and wanted to understand why they had come.

The Vice-Chancellor said the officers later informed him that they had an arrest warrant. He said he asked them to explain the reason for the proposed arrest.

According to Ogunwole, the matter was connected to a petition allegedly filed by individuals linked to the university, including former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abayomi Fasina and former Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Kehinde Adeola.

Dispute Linked to Alleged Leaked Audio Recording

Ogunwole said the dispute followed an allegedly leaked audio recording, after which the university management invited the individuals involved to appear before an investigative committee.

He added that the matter later became the subject of court proceedings and said his lawyers had already contacted the police regarding the case.

The Vice-Chancellor also recalled that he had previously honored a police invitation over another petition. He said he appeared with his lawyers, answered questions for several hours, and was subsequently released.

Ogunwole questioned why the latest matter could not have been handled through a formal invitation rather than sending police officers to his residence early in the morning.

FUOYE Staff and Students Rally in Support

Following the incident, academic and non-academic staff members, as well as students, reportedly mobilized to the Vice-Chancellor’s residence in solidarity.

ASUU FUOYE branch chairman, Dr. Ojo Fagbuagun, said the union would resist what he described as an attempt to intimidate the Vice-Chancellor.

He also alleged that some individuals connected to the university’s previous administration were unhappy with changes introduced by the current management.

Other staff unions, including NAAT and NASU, also expressed support for Ogunwole.

Their representatives said they were concerned about maintaining peace and stability within the university and praised the Vice-Chancellor for being accessible to staff and attentive to their welfare.

FUOYE Management Reacts to Police Action

The university’s Director of Public Affairs and Communication, Dr. Sunday Saanu, also criticized the police action, describing it as “mischievous.”

Saanu noted that the Vice-Chancellor had previously responded to a police invitation and said the university community remained concerned about the developments surrounding the matter.

The incident has drawn attention within the FUOYE community as staff and students await further developments concerning the petition and the ongoing legal proceedings.
