Fed Poly Oko Responds to Amaokpala Building Collapse

The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, has responded to reports circulating on social media regarding the collapse of a multi-storey building in Amaokpala, a neighbouring community to Oko in Anambra State, clarifying that no student of the institution lost their life in the incident.

In a statement, the Polytechnic stressed that the collapsed building is not located within the institution’s premises. Rather, the incident occurred at a privately owned lodge in Amaokpala, occupied by both students and non-students.

According to the statement, the building, reportedly known as the 5 Elite Storey Building and situated beside Tonimas Filling Station, collapsed late on Sunday night. The management noted that reports claiming the incident occurred within the Polytechnic or that all the occupants were students of the institution are false.

The Polytechnic further stated that, as of the time of issuing the statement, no student of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, had been confirmed dead, and no fatalities had been recorded as a result of the collapse.

Following news of the incident, the Rector, Dr Chioma Irene Awuzie, visited the scene at about 6:36 a.m. to assess the situation and ascertain the welfare of any students who might have been affected.

She was received by the President of the Students’ Union Government, Comrade Anuluonye Ifechukwu Joseph, the Polytechnic’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Oguegbu Celestine Udoka, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Comrade Chibuzo Asomugha, the Chief Security Officer, and other members of staff.

Also present at the scene were the Anambra State Commissioner for Works, Architect Okey Ezeobi, and the Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Ben Obidike, who joined emergency responders in assessing the situation and supporting the rescue operation.

The institution disclosed that several occupants had already been rescued and were receiving medical treatment for injuries reported to be non-life-threatening. It added that approximately two individuals, who are reportedly not students of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, were believed to remain trapped, with rescue efforts continuing.

The Polytechnic also noted that the incident occurred after the conclusion of the second semester examinations, when many students had already vacated their hostels and travelled home for the semester break.

The management therefore urged members of the public to disregard unverified reports, sensational claims and misleading narratives surrounding the incident, particularly those alleging that the building collapse occurred within the Polytechnic or that a large number of its students were trapped.

The institution reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and welfare of its students and stated that it would continue to monitor developments while rescue operations remain ongoing.

The Polytechnic also commended the emergency responders, government officials, security agencies, volunteers and all others involved in the rescue efforts, adding that further updates would be provided as credible information becomes available.
