NANS condemns killing of UniJos student accused of stealing iPhone

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the killing of Ibrahim Mbaye, a student of the University of Jos, who was allegedly beaten to death by a mob over claims that he stole an iPhone.

In a statement issued on Monday, the NANS National President, Akinteye Babatunde, described the incident as tragic and unacceptable, stressing that no allegation should result in mob action or any form of extrajudicial punishment.

According to Babatunde, Mbaye was reportedly attacked by a group of people, publicly humiliated and confined in a room before he died, despite reports that the missing iPhone was never found in his possession.

He described the student’s death as a painful loss, adding that no one deserves to be subjected to such treatment without due process of law.

The NANS President welcomed reports that security agencies had arrested some individuals in connection with the incident, stating that those responsible must be brought to justice.

He warned against taking the law into one’s own hands, noting that mob justice has no place in educational institutions or in society.

Babatunde urged students and the wider public to reject mob violence and allow law enforcement agencies to investigate criminal allegations through the proper legal process.

He also extended his condolences to Mbaye’s family, friends and the University of Jos community, praying that they find the strength to bear the loss.

The student leader further called on security agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial and swift investigation to ensure that everyone involved in the student’s death is held accountable.

According to him, justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done, as this would help deter future acts of mob violence. He emphasised that no student should lose their life as a result of jungle justice.

Meanwhile, the Plateau State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the alleged killing.
