NECO Opens Registration for the 2026 GCE
The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced the commencement of registration for the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External for private candidates.

The 2026 SSCE External will be conducted in a dual mode, combining Hybrid Computer-Based Examination (CBE) and Pen-and-Paper Examination (PPE) across 16 selected subjects. Registration is available both online and offline.
How to Register
Candidates should visit the NECO SSCE External registration portal, create an account using a valid email address or phone number, purchase a registration quota, complete their biodata, and then visit a reputable cybercafé for biometric fingerprint capture and final registration.
Registration Requirements
- A passport photograph with a white background, taken within the last six months.
- A valid National Identification Number (NIN).
- Biometric fingerprint capture is compulsory during registration.
- Biometric verification will also be carried out during the examination. Candidates with mismatched fingerprints or passport photographs will be treated as impersonators and sanctioned in line with existing regulations.
Registration Fee
The registration fee is ₦30,000, which includes a four-figure mathematical table and a waterproof certificate jacket/folder.

Registration Timeline
- Registration opens: 7 July 2026
- Registration closes: 17 November 2026 (11:59 p.m.)
- Late registration: 18–24 November 2026 (additional ₦5,000 fee)
- Walk-in registration: ₦43,000 per candidate
Examination Dates
The examination will hold from Wednesday, 25 November to Saturday, 12 December 2026.
Photocard and Timetable
After completing registration, candidates must obtain:
- The official examination timetable.
- At least one clear copy of the NECO photocard, which will serve as the examination entry pass.
The referee’s attestation section of the photocard must be signed and stamped by any of the following:
- Principal of a recognised secondary school
- Ordained clergyman or Chief Imam
- Commissioned officer of the Armed Forces or Police (not below the rank of Captain or its equivalent)
- Senior Civil Servant on Grade Level 14 or above
- Legal practitioner with at least ten years’ experience
Candidates are no longer required to submit their attestation/photocards to NECO State Offices for stamping.
Candidates with Special Needs
Candidates with special needs should register through the normal process but must accurately indicate the nature of their disability while completing their online biodata.
Examination Centres
Candidates are required to choose an examination neighbourhood within their preferred state. The selected neighbourhood cannot be changed after registration. Candidates should reprint their photocard at least two weeks before the examination to confirm their examination centre.

Mock Examination
A mock examination will be organised for interested candidates. The schedule will be announced by NECO before the commencement of the main examination.
Important Information
- The 2026 SSCE External will be conducted in both Hybrid Computer-Based and Pen-and-Paper formats.
- Walk-in candidates may register at least three hours before the paper they intend to sit.
- Candidates are entitled to one-time correction before the examination begins. However, a complete change of name is not permitted, and only one name component or the passport photograph may be corrected alongside other registration details.
- The photograph uploaded during registration and the candidate’s NIN will appear on the certificate.
- Mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets, programmable calculators, and other electronic communication devices are strictly prohibited in the examination hall.
- Candidates must wear mufti. Anyone carrying weapons or prohibited items will not be allowed into the examination centre.
- Multiple registrations are prohibited and will lead to the cancellation of all results.
- Candidates should arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of each paper. No candidate will be admitted after the examination has commenced.
