Over 100 Students Hospitalised as Strange Gas Emissions Affect Ogun Schools Again

Over 100 Students Hospitalised as Strange Gas Emissions Affect Ogun Schools Again

More than 100 students from several secondary schools in Ijebu-Ode, Ago-Iwoye and Ijebu-Igbo areas of Ogun State were reportedly hospitalised on Wednesday following another suspected gas emission incident.

The incident left students and teachers experiencing breathing difficulties, while some students reportedly fainted and were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency medical attention.

The recurring suspected gas emissions have raised fresh concerns about the safety of students and school staff, with parents and residents calling on the Ogun State Government to identify the source of the problem and prevent further exposure.

Ogun Gas Emissions: Students Rushed to Hospitals

According to reports, the affected students were taken to the State Hospital in Ijebu-Ode, the General Hospital in Ijebu-Igbo and other healthcare facilities for treatment.

Schools reportedly affected by the latest incident include Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School, Anglican Girls Grammar School in Ijebu-Ode and Itamerin Comprehensive High School in Ago-Iwoye.

Videos circulating on social media reportedly showed students collapsing as panic spread across the affected school communities.

A teacher from one of the schools, who spoke anonymously, said the incident began at about 10 a.m. on Wednesday when students and staff started experiencing breathing difficulties.

The teacher added that some schools in Ago-Iwoye were forced to close around 11 a.m. as the situation worsened.

Worried parents also reportedly rushed to their children’s schools to take them home, as the source of the suspected gas emissions remained unknown.

Repeated Gas Emissions in Ijebu Land Raise Safety Concerns

The latest incident is reportedly the fourth occurrence of suspected gaseous emissions affecting schools in Ijebu land since April 2026.

According to accounts from previous incidents, approximately 40 students were affected during the first reported occurrence. In May, more than 120 students were reportedly hospitalised following another incident.

On June 1, a further occurrence reportedly resulted in 69 students being taken to hospitals for medical attention.

Schools previously affected included Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Epe Garage, Ijebu-Ode, Anglican Girls Grammar School in Ijebu-Ode and St Anthony Grammar School in Ijebu-Imusin.

The repeated incidents have heightened concerns among parents, teachers and residents, particularly because some of the affected schools are located in areas where similar emissions have previously been reported.

A teacher familiar with the situation expressed concern about the recurring incidents, claiming that hundreds of students had been affected since April 2026.

The teacher urged the Ogun State Government to intensify its investigation, identify the source of the emissions and introduce measures to protect students and school workers.

Ogun Government Investigates Suspected Gas Emissions

Following earlier incidents, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun said the state government was working with relevant agencies and experts to determine the cause of the suspected gas emissions.

The investigation reportedly involved the Ministries of Environment and Health, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, and the Department of Geology at Olabisi Onabanjo University.

Speaking in June, Abiodun said gas analysers had been installed in affected schools to determine the nature and concentration of the emissions.

The governor explained that the incidents had occurred at approximately the same time in different schools on separate occasions.

According to him, preliminary tests identified the gas as methane, while further investigations were being conducted to establish the underlying cause.

He also said preliminary findings suggested that geological conditions, including possible fault lines in the affected areas, could be contributing to the phenomenon.

However, the government was still awaiting the final report from the experts investigating the incidents.

Environment Commissioner Reacts to Latest Incident

Ogun State Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya reportedly said the government was monitoring the situation following the latest occurrence.

Oresanya assured the public that authorities were responding to the incident.

Kehinde Bello, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abiodun and General Manager of the Ogun State Environmental Agency, also commented on the situation after visiting affected areas in Ijebu-Ode and Ijebu-Igbo.

Bello said the government was working towards finding a lasting solution to the recurring problem.

He explained that preliminary investigations suggested the emissions might be associated with natural underground gas occurrences linked to geological and tectonic fault lines.

According to Bello, the available findings did not indicate sabotage or a gas pipeline leak as the likely cause.

He urged residents to remain calm and said the affected students were expected to recover after receiving medical attention.

Bello also advised people exposed to the unusual odour to cover their noses and mouths with wet handkerchiefs rather than wear nose masks.

However, the precise source of the emissions and the reasons for their repeated occurrence have yet to be conclusively established.

Parents Demand Urgent Action Over Ogun School Gas Incidents

The latest suspected gas emission incident has renewed calls for urgent government intervention to protect students, teachers and other school workers in the affected communities.

Parents and residents want the authorities to complete their investigations, publicly communicate the findings and implement effective measures to prevent further exposure.

Although the state government has outlined preliminary findings and ongoing monitoring efforts, concerns remain over the recurrence of the incidents and the potential risks to school communities.

As of the time this report was filed, medical personnel were attending to affected students at general hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

The public is awaiting further updates from the Ogun State Government on the condition of the students, the outcome of the investigation and the measures being taken to prevent another occurrence.

The priority remains establishing the actual source of the suspected emissions and ensuring that schools in Ijebu-Ode, Ago-Iwoye, Ijebu-Igbo and surrounding communities are safe for learning.
