UNIBEN Lecturers Continue Strike Over August Salary Disput

Lecturers at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have resolved to continue their indefinite strike over what they described as the incomplete payment of their August 2026 salaries.

The decision was reached on Friday during a congress of the university’s ASUU branch, where members expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of clear information from the university administration regarding the salary payments.

In a communique issued after the meeting and signed by the branch Chairman, Enaruna Edosa, and Secretary, Lucky Aimiyekagbon, the union said the university management had made a partial payment of the August salaries.

However, the lecturers said the administration had not provided sufficient details on the amount already paid, the outstanding balance, or when the remaining salaries would be settled.

ASUU Insists on Full Payment

Following extensive deliberations, the congress resolved that the withdrawal of academic services should continue until the outstanding August salaries are fully paid.

The branch had initially commenced the strike on Wednesday after alleging that academic staff members received only 50 percent of their August salaries.

The union subsequently convened its congress to assess the situation and determine its next course of action.

During the meeting, the branch chairman informed members that the university administration had made a partial payment. He reportedly explained, however, that despite requests for a breakdown of the payment, the university bursar had not provided figures indicating how much had been paid and what remained outstanding.

Based on the information available to the congress, members resolved that the strike should continue until the salary issue is fully resolved and the necessary payment details are made available.

UNIBEN Management Disputes ASUU’s Claim

The university management has, however, rejected the claim that academic staff members received only half of their August salaries.

The institution described the allegation as inaccurate.

In a statement, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehannire, said the Federal Government had paid the salaries of all categories of staff at the university up to August 2026.

The conflicting positions have left the salary dispute unresolved.

While the university management maintains that staff salaries have been paid up to August, the UNIBEN ASUU branch insists that outstanding payments remain due to its members.

The lecturers have therefore resolved to maintain the industrial action pending the full settlement of the disputed salary payments and the provision of clear information regarding the amounts allegedly outstanding.
