The affected students, Godswill Ifiok Udom and Chukwu Godswill A., are from the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences. The university said the disciplinary action followed an incident involving the possession of unauthorised materials during an examination.

Why UNICAL Suspended Two Economics Students

According to the university, the incident occurred on February 20, 2026, during the ECO 307 examination on Project Evaluation. The students were reportedly found in possession of unauthorised materials while the examination was ongoing.

The discovery prompted an investigation into the alleged examination malpractice, leading to disciplinary proceedings against the two students.

The university subsequently issued separate suspension letters to the affected students, informing them of the sanctions imposed following the investigation.

UNICAL Senate Approves One Academic Session Suspension

The suspension letters, dated October 5, 2026, were signed by the university’s Registrar, Dr Chukwuka Icha.

The decision followed recommendations from the Senate Examination Misconduct Committee, which investigated the incident and submitted its findings to the university’s Senate for consideration.

At its 258th meeting, held on October 2, 2026, the Senate reviewed the committee’s report and approved the suspension of both Economics students for the 2026/2027 academic session.

The decision forms part of the university’s disciplinary measures against students found to have violated its examination regulations.

ECO 307 Results Cancelled Over Examination Malpractice

In addition to the one-session suspension, the UNICAL Senate ordered the cancellation of the students’ results in ECO 307, the course in which the alleged examination malpractice occurred.

The cancellation means the students will not retain their results for the affected examination, in line with the disciplinary decision communicated by the institution.

Copies of the suspension letters were forwarded to the Acting Chief Security Officer, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Head of the Department of Economics for implementation.

When Will the Suspended UNICAL Students Resume?

According to the suspension letters, the two students are expected to resume their academic activities in the 2027/2028 academic session.

Their suspension covers the 2026/2027 academic session, during which they are barred from continuing their normal academic activities under the terms of the university’s decision.

The disciplinary action highlights the consequences students may face when found in violation of institutional examination rules.

UNICAL Reaffirms Zero Tolerance for Examination Malpractice

The University of Calabar maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards examination malpractice and other forms of academic dishonesty.

The suspension of the two Economics students underscores the institution’s commitment to upholding academic integrity, enforcing examination regulations and maintaining the credibility of its academic qualifications.

The university’s action also serves as a reminder to students to comply with examination guidelines and avoid possessing unauthorised materials during examinations.

As universities continue to enforce academic discipline, examination malpractice remains a serious issue that can result in sanctions, including the cancellation of results and suspension from academic activities.
