Akinleye emerged as the overall best graduating student in the Department of Biochemistry and the Faculty of Life Sciences at UNILORIN. He was also among the top two students out of 13,020 graduates in his graduating set.

From Medicine to Biochemistry

Akinleye initially aspired to study Medicine. However, after gaining admission to the University of Ilorin in 2018, he was admitted to the Biochemistry program instead.

Rather than abandoning his academic ambitions, he researched the discipline and decided to embrace Biochemistry. His interest in science had already been strengthened by his performance at the 2017 National Biology Olympiad, where he emerged as the best student.

Although he was warned that Biochemistry was a demanding course, Akinleye remained committed to the program. He said his decision was also influenced by his faith and a spiritual experience involving his father.

How He Graduated With a 4.96 CGPA

From his first year at UNILORIN, Akinleye set an ambitious goal of graduating with outstanding academic results.

He completed his 100-level year with a perfect 5.0 CGPA, which gave him confidence that he could finish at the top of his class.

Akinleye was aware of the perception that it would be difficult for a Biochemistry student to emerge as the best graduating student in the Faculty of Life Sciences because of the demanding coursework and additional Chemistry requirements.

Instead of allowing that perception to discourage him, he decided to challenge it.

He adopted a rigorous study routine, sometimes spending up to 16 hours studying in a day and dedicating significant time to solving past examination questions.

His hard work eventually paid off.

In 2022, Akinleye graduated from UNILORIN with a B.Sc. in Biochemistry and a 4.96/5.00 CGPA, earning recognition as one of the university’s top graduating students.

Nine Fully Funded PhD Offers From US Universities

After completing his undergraduate degree, Akinleye became a graduate fellow with EducationUSA, where he received guidance on applying to graduate programs in the United States.

The program helped him navigate the application process and provided support with some application-related expenses. He also received assistance with visa interview preparation and flight expenses as he prepared to begin his graduate studies in the US.

In 2025, his preparation resulted in nine fully funded PhD admission offers from universities across the United States.

The offers enabled him to proceed directly to doctoral studies without first earning a master’s degree.

The universities that offered him admission included:

  • Purdue University
  • Stony Brook University
  • Michigan State University
  • Iowa State University
  • Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
  • Texas Tech University
  • Auburn University
  • University of Vermont

Some of the offers also included prestigious fellowships, including the Ross Fellowship and Lynn Fellowship, alongside other forms of financial support.

Why He Chose Stony Brook University

After considering the opportunities available to him, Akinleye selected Stony Brook University, where he is currently pursuing his PhD.

His journey from aspiring Medicine student to UNILORIN’s top Biochemistry graduate and recipient of nine fully funded PhD offers demonstrates the impact of academic preparation, determination, and strategic planning.

Akinleye’s Advice to Students Seeking Opportunities Abroad

Reflecting on his academic journey, Akinleye said his success was not based on his CGPA alone.

He attributed his achievements to faith, self-belief, preparation, hard work, and seeking guidance when necessary.

He also emphasized that a strong undergraduate result is only one part of securing admission to graduate programs abroad.

According to Akinleye, students seeking international educational opportunities should look beyond their CGPA and strengthen other aspects of their academic and professional profiles.

His experience shows how deliberate preparation and persistence can help students turn academic achievements into opportunities for advanced study abroad.
