400-Level IBBU Student Reportedly Killed by Stray Bullet During Military Operation
A 400-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, Niger State, has reportedly been killed by a stray bullet during a military operation in Wawa community, Borgu Local Government Area of the state.
The deceased, identified as Ismail Ishaq Magaji, was a student of Public Administration. He was reportedly caught in sporadic gunfire following a communal dispute over land in the community.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, September 17, 2026, during a military response to the clash.
According to reports from the community, personnel attached to a military task force operating around New Bussa and neighbouring areas opened fire during the confrontation.
One of the bullets allegedly struck Magaji while he was caught in the situation.
Student Was Reportedly at Home
Magaji was reportedly at home after returning from the university following the indefinite strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which had disrupted academic activities at IBBU.
He was said to have been preparing to complete his final year and sit his examinations before the disruption of academic activities.
The report added that Magaji had been expected to commence his final examinations around September 5, but the disruption prevented him from doing so.
Coursemate Mourns Promising Student
A coursemate, Yahaya Gambo Lawal, described Magaji as a promising final-year student who was looking forward to completing his studies and contributing to society.
Lawal described the deceased as gentle, calm, friendly and accommodating, expressing sadness over the circumstances surrounding his death.
He said Magaji was expected to be preparing for his final examinations before academic activities were disrupted by the strike.
Lawal also expressed concern over the fact that the student reportedly lost his life during an operation involving personnel whose duty was to protect members of the community.
University Community in Mourning
Magaji’s death has reportedly left his classmates and other members of the university community mourning the loss of a student who was close to completing his degree.
His classmates are said to have expressed sadness over the loss, particularly because he was reportedly preparing to conclude his studies and sit his final examinations.
