ASUU Threatens Fresh Strike Over 2025 Agreement
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed its branches in 20 universities to prepare for industrial action over the alleged failure of the Federal and state governments to fully implement the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement.
The union issued a 14-day ultimatum to the affected governments and university authorities to resolve the outstanding issues. ASUU warned that the affected branches would commence strike action immediately after the ultimatum expires if their demands are not addressed.
The decision was reached at ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, 2026. ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, said an emergency NEC meeting would be held in late August or early September to review the situation and determine the union’s next steps.
The affected institutions include Nasarawa State University, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Gombe State University, Plateau State University, Adekunle Ajasin University, Ambrose Alli University, Abia State University, Kaduna State University, Imo State University, Niger Delta University, Taraba State University, and Northwest University, Kano, among others.
ASUU attributed the development to what it described as the “haphazard implementation” of the 2025 agreement and delays in releasing the government funding required to fully implement its provisions. The union also accused some state governments of failing to implement the agreement in their universities.
The agreement, signed in December 2025 after years of negotiations, was designed to address issues relating to lecturers’ salaries, allowances, research funding, welfare, infrastructure, and the general funding of public universities. It included a 40% increase in academic staff remuneration, as well as new allowances such as the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance.
However, ASUU said implementation has been inconsistent, with some universities allegedly receiving only part of the agreed benefits while others have yet to implement several provisions.
The union also raised concerns about academic promotions, appointments, and insecurity on university campuses. It directed affected branches to report security incidents involving its members to the relevant authorities.
With the 14-day ultimatum now in effect, the Federal Government and affected state governments face renewed pressure to resolve the outstanding issues before the dispute escalates into another university crisis.
