Her emotional story, shared in a TikTok video by a close friend, has touched many Nigerians and sparked an outpouring of sympathy on social media.
According to Eniola, she was deployed to Akwa Ibom State for her NYSC programme but was asked to leave the orientation camp after falling ill about two weeks into the exercise. While travelling home, the vehicle conveying her was involved in a fatal road accident.
She revealed that she was the only survivor of the crash but suffered a severe spinal cord injury that left her paralysed.
Since the accident, Eniola said she has lost all sensation below her chest and has remained bedridden for nearly five years. She explained that she can no longer walk or move her legs and has also battled painful bedsores caused by prolonged immobility.
In her search for treatment, she said she encountered individuals who falsely claimed they could cure spinal cord injuries. According to her, she was exploited by some practitioners, and one of the treatments allegedly led to the amputation of one of her toes while leaving her with persistent electric shock-like sensations in her leg.
Eniola also spoke about the emotional toll of her condition, revealing that she attempted to take her own life on three occasions after struggling to cope with her new reality. Despite the challenges, she said surviving the accident has given her a renewed appreciation for life and hope that her situation can still improve.
