Despite delivering outstanding results at work, a high-performing NYSC corps member was reportedly denied permanent employment after colleagues chose to recommend another corps member they described as more respectful and easier to work with.
A workplace story has sparked widespread reactions online after an employee explained why a brilliant NYSC corps member was not recommended for permanent employment despite her exceptional performance.
According to the employee, two female corps members are currently serving in the same office, with the company planning to retain only one after the completion of their service year. To guide the decision, the Human Resources department requested feedback from staff members.
Although one of the corps members had consistently impressed with her performance, particularly in marketing, where she secured a major business deal for the company, several colleagues reportedly described her as rude and difficult to work with.
The second corps member, while still developing her professional skills, was said to be respectful, humble, and easy to work with. Her positive attitude and willingness to learn reportedly earned her the support of most employees.
According to the employee, many staff members believed technical skills could be improved through training, but a poor attitude could continue to create challenges in the workplace. As a result, they recommended the more approachable corps member for permanent employment.
The incident has since generated debate on social media, with many arguing that professionalism, teamwork, and good character are just as important as competence and exceptional job performance when employers make hiring and retention decisions.
