The Lagos State University (LASU) has commenced disciplinary proceedings following the alleged assault of one of its students by a parent at a private hostel in Ikeja, Lagos.

The incident, which reportedly involved students of the University’s College of Medicine, was captured on video and subsequently circulated widely on social media.

Although the incident occurred outside the University’s campus, LASU said it had taken steps to address the matter.

The video showed a woman repeatedly assaulting a younger woman, while people at the scene appealed to her to stop. The circumstances that led to the confrontation have not been fully established.

According to the caption accompanying the viral video, the woman allegedly visited the private hostel to confront her daughter’s roommate. However, LASU said it could not independently confirm all the details contained in the social media post.

The University stated that the affected student had reported the incident to the police and that the matter had been handled through the appropriate law enforcement authorities.

LASU’s Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, confirmed that the University had also initiated disciplinary action in accordance with its rules and regulations.

The institution strongly condemned the incident, stressing that violence, intimidation and harassment involving students, staff or visitors will not be tolerated, whether such incidents occur within or outside the University’s premises.

LASU urged students to conduct themselves responsibly and promptly report any situation that could threaten their safety to the appropriate authorities.

The University also advised parents to engage constructively with the institution and encourage their children and wards to uphold discipline and integrity.

LASU reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare, safety and academic success of its students while ensuring that appropriate measures are taken whenever its students are involved in incidents of this nature.
