Students of the Taraba State College of Nursing Sciences in Jalingo staged a protest on Monday following an early-morning attack on one of the female student hostels located outside the college premises.

The incident reportedly involved the theft of mobile phones and other valuables belonging to students. There was also an allegation that a female student was raped during the attack. Her identity has not been disclosed, and she was reportedly taken to a private hospital in the Mile 6 area of Jalingo for medical attention.

A student union official, who spoke anonymously, said the incident was the second reported attack on student accommodation within two weeks. According to the official, students had previously raised concerns about their safety following an earlier incident.

The representative said that after the first attack, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education visited the college and reportedly assured students that additional security measures would be introduced around the hostels. However, the students claim that adequate improvements have yet to be made.

The students have also expressed concern over the location of the accommodation. The college reportedly has seven hostels—six for female students and one for male students—but all are situated outside the main college premises.

According to the students, inadequate security around the hostels has left residents vulnerable and increased concerns about their safety.

The latest incident prompted students to take to the streets, calling for stronger security measures and better protection at the hostels.

The Provost of the college, Dr Dorcas Dugule, acknowledged the incident when contacted and said steps were being taken to address the situation. She, however, declined to provide further details at the time.

The Taraba State Police Command also confirmed that an attack occurred in the early hours of Monday. Police said some hostels were burgled and students’ phones were stolen.

Police spokesperson Victor Mshelizah said the alleged rape had not been independently confirmed at the time, adding that officers were on their way to the college to investigate the incident.
