From Scholarship to Heartbreak: How Halima Lost Her Chance to Study in America

Halima Yahaya’s dream of studying abroad appeared to be within reach in April 2025 when she secured admission to Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, after years of hoping for the opportunity to study in the United States.

From Scholarship to Heartbreak

Her excitement grew when she was awarded a Presidential Scholarship by the university. However, as she completed the necessary admission requirements and worked towards obtaining her I-20, Halima discovered that she was required to provide a bank statement showing a financial balance of $33,000.

The unexpected financial requirement quickly became a major obstacle. Halima and her family sought assistance from people around them but were unable to raise the required amount before the deadline.

As the months passed, Halima continued attending virtual orientation programmes and remained hopeful that a solution would emerge. Eventually, with the new academic session approaching and the financial challenge unresolved, she was forced to defer her admission.

By August, while other students were preparing to begin university, Halima was still at home. She withdrew from social media and struggled to process the disappointment of watching a dream she had worked towards remain out of reach.

During this difficult period, journalling became a source of comfort. With the support of her parents, particularly her mother, and encouragement from her father, a soldier, Halima gradually began to accept that her journey might take a different direction.

She eventually returned to social media and began sharing personal reflections on Instagram. In January 2026, she also enrolled in culinary school, describing the experience as a safe space that helped her rebuild her confidence while continuing to pursue her educational ambitions.

Halima has since resumed applying to universities and recently secured admission to Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania with a merit scholarship.

Her experience has taught her to be patient with uncertainty, avoid comparing her journey with those of others and continue moving forward even when plans do not unfold as expected.
