Former Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), James Adio, has revealed that Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage inspired him to remain resilient after an explicit video allegedly involving him was circulated online.

Speaking during an interview with Tiamiyu Adebayo TV, Adio said he found encouragement in the way Tiwa Savage handled the backlash that followed the leak of her private video in 2021. According to him, seeing the singer move on from the controversy convinced him that he could also rebuild his life despite public criticism.

He explained that he was determined not to allow the incident to define his future, adding that he had invested too much effort in his education and personal growth to give up because of a public scandal.

Adio recalled that he was initially unaware of the video’s circulation until he checked his phone and discovered the widespread reactions on social media. Realising that many people were watching to see how he would respond, he decided to remain focused rather than be overwhelmed by the criticism.

The former student leader also expressed gratitude to the many current and former FUOYE students who stood by him during the difficult period. He said their support reminded him of the positive contributions he made while serving as SUG President.

Reflecting on his election, Adio described his emergence as one of the most challenging moments of his life, noting that he defeated 13 other candidates to win the position. He said the experience taught him that leadership often attracts criticism and that public figures are frequently subjected to intense scrutiny.

According to him, his administration remained committed to protecting students’ interests, and the goodwill he built during his tenure became evident when many students publicly defended him following the controversy.

Adio also acknowledged the support of his family, particularly his mother, whom he credited with helping him through the ordeal. He admitted that he initially feared his family would reject him after the video surfaced, but their unwavering encouragement gave him the strength to move forward.

Earlier, FUOYE suspended Adio over allegations that about ₦700,000 collected as unauthorised levies from newly admitted students had been traced to his bank account. Shortly afterwards, an explicit video allegedly involving him emerged on social media, attracting widespread attention and prompting investigations.

Following the incident, the University suspended two students over allegations of cyberbullying and blackmail linked to the circulation of the video.

Despite the controversies, Adio has since completed his academic programme and officially signed out of the University.
