UNIJOS declares lecture-free period, calls meeting
The management of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) has announced a crucial broad-based meeting for all students to address growing security concerns within the university community.
The directive was contained in an internal memorandum dated 29 July 2026 and signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tanko Ishaya. The development follows recent security measures introduced by the institution in response to concerns about the safety of students and staff on and around the campus.
According to the memorandum, the meeting is intended to discuss general security issues affecting the university, recent undesirable activities involving students, and measures aimed at safeguarding the well-being of members of the university community.
The meeting is scheduled to hold on Friday, 31 July 2026, at the Faculty of Social Sciences Auditorium, commencing at 9:00 a.m.
To ensure maximum participation, the university has directed all Deans and Heads of Departments to declare a lecture-free period from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on the day of the meeting. The management stated that this arrangement would enable students to attend and actively participate in the discussions.
The notice further emphasised that attendance is compulsory for all students, while members of the distribution list are also expected to be present.
The latest directive follows a series of security-related measures introduced by the university, including the recent suspension of non-academic activities in the university halls, as management continues efforts to strengthen security and ensure the safety of the campus community.
