UNIZIK Medical School Secures Full MDCN Accreditation as Admission Quota Rises from 100 to 300

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has granted full accreditation to the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), following a recent accreditation and re-accreditation exercise at the institution.

The development marks a significant milestone for the university’s College of Health Sciences and medical training programme, with the accreditation also resulting in a major increase in the number of students the university is permitted to admit into its MBBS programme.

Under the new approval, UNIZIK’s medical school admission quota has been increased from 100 to 300 students, allowing the institution to admit three times its previous number of medical students.

The development followed the conclusion of an MDCN team’s re-accreditation exercise for the MBBS programme, alongside an accreditation exercise for the university’s Dental programme.

The accreditation process is part of the regulatory measures used to assess medical and dental training programmes and ensure that institutions meet the required academic, professional and infrastructural standards for training future healthcare professionals.

Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, expressed gratitude for the successful outcome.

The Vice-Chancellor, reflecting on the achievement, said:

“I can’t thank God enough, His mercy and grace are my only strength.”

The approval is expected to further strengthen UNIZIK’s capacity to train medical professionals and expand opportunities for prospective students seeking admission into the MBBS programme.

The increase in the admission quota from 100 to 300 also represents a substantial expansion in the university’s capacity to accommodate aspiring medical students, subject to the applicable admission requirements and procedures.

The successful accreditation has been welcomed as an important achievement for the university community and another step in the institution’s efforts to strengthen medical and dental education.
